Emma Porter


Emma took on the role of Chair of Story Plant Limited in April 2024 having previously held the Managing Director role for two years. She had previously held the role of Construction Managing Director for Story Contracting after returning to the company in April 2019 following a successful stretch at Arup. Emma led the Construction division to deliver a growing portfolio of multi-discipled civil engineering, infrastructure, bridges and industrial building projects.

Having worked in the industry for 15 years and becoming the first Cumbrian woman to study at Europe’s leading business school, INSEAD, Emma upholds a strong reputation for her industry knowledge, ability to deliver and understanding of the local economy.

Ian Purdham

Managing Director

Ian joined Story Plant as Managing Director in April 2024, having previously worked at Story for 15 years, culminating in him leading Story Contracting’s rail business in England between 2017 and 2020, after which he took on the Regional Managing Director (North) role for AmcoGiffen.

Ian’s role is to lead the Plant business to deliver a best-in-class service to the industry through a team that is customer and solution focused; with an industry leading fleet of high quality, reliable and innovative Plant. Ian is committed to ensuring Story Plant is focused on providing a level of service that assures our clients of safe delivery, collaboration and integration with their teams and plans to deliver consistent outputs and to be always looking at how we bring new solutions to market that meet the needs of industry challenges.

Paul Price

Business Development Director

With over 28 years’ experience in the Rail and Plant industry, Paul joined Story Plant as Business Development Director in August 2020 from Speedy Asset Service. In his role, Paul works with the rest of the team to grow and develop the division’s projects and client base.

Paul brings extensive experience having held the position of Business Development Director for over nine years in both Speedy and A-Plant, and previous experience working with Carillion Rail and Torrent Trackside Ltd.

Mark Bruce

Professional Head of Plant

Mark joined Story Plant in 2001, having previously spent 18 years in Plant hire, Rail and Opencast mining. In 2003 he moved to the Training Department, taking on Trainer/Assessor and Training Manager roles before he transferred back to Plant to head the Operations Team. In 2016 Mark took up the new post of Head of Technical Development with his key responsibilities being to provide technical support in Plant activities and to explore innovative solutions to meet client needs. In 2023 Mark took on the role of Professional Head of Plant, including additional responsibility for Story Plant’s POS activities to support its continued growth, as well as providing increased support to Story Plant’s regional maintenance functions.

In order to provide our clients with a consistently high level of service, Story Plant operates a number of specialist teams containing some of the best talent in the UK Plant industry.

From our regional teams to our maintenance and refurbishment teams, everyone at Story Plant plays an integral part in ensuring we continue to live by our ‘Do it Right!’ motto.


Refurbishment Team

Working from our Carlisle Depot, our Refurbishment Team are responsible for the refurbishment and upgrade of our extensive fleet of machinery. Carrying out these works in-house provides us with greater control and flexibility ensuring any upgrades meet the needs of our clients. This is whilst reducing upgrade programme times, meaning we can have as many machines as possible available to fulfil your project needs.


Maintenance Teams

Our Maintenance teams operate from each of our regional depots, working to ensure our fleet operates at the highest levels of performance and reliability time and time again. As well as pre and post-shift testing and maintenance, our team of fitters are on-hand on-site to ensure maximum machine efficiency for your project.


Carlisle Regional Team

Based from our Head Office in Carlisle our team are on-hand to support projects throughout the country. Working collaboratively with clients throughout the North West, Midlands and down to London, our team are on-hand to meet the needs of even the most complex of projects.


Leeds Regional Team

Our team based from our Leeds Depot carry out projects throughout the entire Eastern region. Whether you are completing a complex earthworks scheme, track renewals, structure inspections or a wide range of other work types, our team are on-hand to ensure safe and efficient project delivery.


Birmingham Regional Team

The team based from our newest depot in Birmingham carry out projects for a wide range of clients across the Midlands, Southern England and the surrounding areas. Working hand-in-hand with our clients throughout the region, our team have vast experience in the safe and efficient delivery of projects.


Scotland Regional Team

Our offices and depots in Blantyre and Bonnyrigg provide the team with a perfect base to support our clients throughout the length and breadth of Scotland. With vast experience from management through to our operators and fitters on-site, our Scotland team are on-hand to support your projects from the Borders to the Highlands.



Stores Team

Our Stores team operate from three of our regional depots in Carlisle, Leeds, Birmingham and Blantyre. The facilities, which feature 5S stock control, specialise in the provision of small plant, PPE and other supplies which are vital for keeping our teams, and your projects, on track throughout the UK.
